Chicago Car Wash Construction Design

Project Summary

A car wash equipment manufacturing company commissioned me to draft site plans for a client’s car wash in Chicago, IL. In addition to drafting construction plans, I laid out underlying plumbing infrastructure, created electrical wiring diagrams, and performed preliminary HVAC work on the project. Standards from the National Electric Code (NEC), ANSI, and ASHRAE were strictly adhered to throughout the process. The client was extremely satisfied with the performed work.

Design

I was given a “back of a napkin” sketched drawing on how the car wash was to be laid out. I was also given a diagram of the available space for the site, pictured to the right. I designed around the strict constraints of railroad lines, property boundaries, and standards. Additionally, I communicated frequently with the clients, who provided valuable input and guidance for me to bring their vision to life.

Code Adherence: NEC

Navigating the National Electric Code (NEC) provided a complex challenge throughout the project. Striking a balance between compliance, efficiency, and cost, I paid meticulous attention to detail in the placement and configuration of electrical components to ensure adequate power distribution efficiency and adhere to all safety guidelines comfortably. Addressing these needs necessitated a comprehensive understanding of the relevant codes and frequent consultation with industry electrical engineers. The outcome was a design that met regulatory requirements, reinforcing the reliability and safety of the electrical systems within the car wash facility.

Code Adherence: ANSI

Ensuring compliance with ANSI criteria meant navigating complexities of materials, dimensioning, and safety protocols. I interacted with ANSI B11—machinery guards—which required the implementation of guards, safeguard devices, and awareness devices onto heavy machinery. I also understood and adhered to ANSI B31—pressure piping—in designing piping to transport hazardous gases and nonhazardous but necessary liquids.

Code Adherence: ASHRAE

Implementing adherence to ASHRAE standards demanded a keen awareness of all things HVAC. For the small indoor portion of the car wash, I verified my designs for ASHRAE 62.1 to keep ventilation rates and indoor air quality within safe standards under worst-case scenarios. In my electrical work, I made sure to verify ASHRAE 90.1, which describes building energy efficiency design requirements. The final project represents significant attention to detail which resulted in worker comfort and environmental sustainability.
